3 lesser-known North Carolina traffic rules

People who visit North Carolina and travel its roadways may understand the general rules of the road; however, a few lesser-known traffic laws in the state may take them by surprise.

The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles notes that while all motorists must wear safety belts and mind all speed limit signs, other lesser-known regulations exist, and those who visit the area may want to remain aware of them to avoid fines and tickets.

1. The fender bender law

When minor accidents occur along North Carolina roadways, the owners of each vehicle must move their cars out of the way of existing traffic. This law typically applies to wrecks that are not serious or that did not result in any injuries to drivers or passengers. Failure to comply may result in a fine of $100 or more.

2. The quick clearance law

Vehicles that break down or that any driver leaves on the side of the road can present a severe safety risk to other vehicles that travel that roadway. Generally, the city’s police force will speak with NCDOT members about the danger and then may remove the vehicle, no matter its condition. The driver may incur a fee, depending on the reason he or she left the vehicle abandoned.

3. Youth helmet laws

Those who visit the city and bring their bicycles to explore parks and trails must abide by the youth helmet law. Under this mandate, bicycle operators under the age of 16 must wear a helmet at all times.

Depending on the type of violations North Carolina drivers commit, they may face fees, jail time and the suspension of their license, based on the severity of the infraction.
